Asustek upbeat on NT$2.4b Sony order

Asustek (2357 ‘Hua Shuo’) is reported to have obtained an order for 200k barebone NB from Sony. The order will contribute around NT$2.4b to 2001 revenues. Asustek has been struggling with expansion into the NB business since 1997. 40% of total NB revenue comes from OEM customers including Epson (Japan), although expansion of OEM customer base is considerably lagging local competitors Arima (2381 ‘Hua Yu’), Compal (2324 ‘Ren Bao’) and Quanta (2382 ‘Guang Da’). Asustek will ship 430k NB in 2000 and is targeting 800k in 2001. NB will account for 20% of total revenues in 2000, and is expected to reach 30% next year.
