Mini-link launch turns back
Bad weather on January 1 2001, the official opening day of mini-links, forced the first
legal tourist boat from Kinmen to Xiamen (China) to abandon the trip. It was
widely speculated that the trip was cancelled because China declined the reception. Also,
the Mainland Affairs Commission (MAC) yesterday submitted a direct transportation links
implementation proposal, in which a two-port-to-two-port opening-up was
recommended. The MAC suggested that air-links will only be developed in the last phase of
opening, and that two airlines and two airports on each side of the strait would be
considered initially.
