Hon Hai to begin IC fabrication

Hon Hai (2317 ‘Hon Hai’) is to ink a deal with the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone govt., enabling it to invest US$1.5m in a new 8-inch fab. Shenzhen, groomed to be an epi-centre of high-tech venture capitalism, has an aggressive and open-minded government body yet lacks a strong supply of research and engineering talents. Hon Hai is well established in the downstream PC connector business, only recently stepping into fiber-optic communications. We remain cautious on the progress of the proposed fab.
