2001 budget just makes it
The Legislative Yuan (LY) finally approved the central governments 2001 budget in
the early hours this morning. Opposition lawmakers that had been using the budget as a
policy tool against the DPP led Cabinet, finally passed the budget before breaking until
the next LY session in Feb. 2001. However, the Cabinets proposed expenditure
suffered a 2% cut down to NT$1.576t, while the central governments revenue is
reported to have been slashed by some NT$78b, down to NT$1.380t. Social welfare accounts
for some 19% of the budget while defense and education each make up 16%, while economic
development takes up some 13%. The remainder consists of administrative and miscellaneous
expenses
