Nuclear plant gets a possible go ahead
he Council of Grand Justices yesterday issued a ruling that stopped short of declaring
the previous halting of construction of the fourth nuclear plant by the Executive Yuan
unconstitutional. Substantial errors were found in the way that the decision was reached,
and the Council will require the Executive Yuan to seek approval from the Legislative
Yuan. This will leave the final decision on whether the construction of the nuclear plant
can proceed to the pro-construction Legislative Yuan. However, it will be months before a
final decision can be reached on the subject. Ultimately, we believe that the construction
of the fourth nuclear plant will continue since a majority of lawmakers back construction.
It is possible that this may lead Premier Chang Chun-hsiung to lose his position.
