VIA nets China CPU orders
VIA Technologies Inc. (2388 'Wei Sheng') has confirmed that it has
received CPU orders from big Chinese PC makers, including Legend and Beijing Founder. From
February, VIA expects to see monthly sales of around 30k units, and anticipates increased
sales volume in 2Q01.
VIA is aiming to gain a 5-7% share of the global CPU market this year,
up from 1% last year. Although monthly sales of 30k units is insufficient to attain this
target, breaking into the China PC market is a positive move. The on-going process of
computerization in commercial and governmental organizations in China is a driving force
for PC demand, despite the slowdown on the global scene.
We believe VIA can expand its share of the CPU market on the back of its
comparative pricing advantages and its move into emerging markets, while at the same time
maintain its leadership position in the chipset market.
