VIA flaunting its move into processors with C3's debut
VIA's (2388 'Wei Sheng') new C3 processor was recently introduced at the
CeBIT electronics show in Germany. C3 is being promoted as a "cheaper and more
efficient" computer processor that further reduces the cost of already low-cost PCs.
The CPU runs at 733MHz and utilizes 0.15micron process technology, and
is only around half the size of Intel's Celeron and AMD's Duron. C3's small size makes for
cost advantages, in line with VIA's strategy to provide affordable, quality PCs.
Market expectations on March revenue are high. Rumors point to a monthly
tally of NT$3.8b, with 1Q01 results coming in at NT$10b. In addition to the
diversification into processors, we believe VIA will maintain its strong position and
remain a competitive player in the chipset market through 1H01. The company's positioning
on DDR will be a key factor in 2H01 performance.
