UMC to close 2 fabs

• Development: UMC is planning to close two 8” fabs, hoping to drive operating expenses down as demand remains weak.

• Analysis: The two fabs, 8B and 8F, are running technologies ranging from 0.13um to 0.35um, with a total monthly capacity of 65k 8” wafers, or 24% of UMC’s total capacity.

• Primasia View: With fab closure being such a desperate move, UMC’s management appears convinced that the weak business outlook will be sustained.
