LCD monitor shipments beat expectations

Compal (2324) NT$26.20

Outperform

Amtran (5405) NT$26.20

Outperform

  • Development: DisplaySearch reports worldwide LCD monitor shipments for 2Q01 at 2.9m, up 23% QoQ and 131% YoY, while CRT monitor shipments fell to 20.1m, a 13% QoQ and 11% YoY decline. The LCD monitor penetration rate hit a record high of 12.4%. DisplaySearch forecasts LCD shipments will climb to 4m in 3Q01, 14m in 2001 and 22.6m in 2002.

  • Analysis: Continuing ASP reduction and lower penetration rates have generated strong demand for LCD monitors. As desktop market is expected to decline in 2001, much growth in LCD demand came from CRT replacement sales. This stand-alone market outpaced the bundled market.

  • Primasia View: We believe Compal, Amtran and ACM will benefit the most from rapid growth in LCD monitors as their clients number among the top 10 global vendors.
